Bali had won my heart. And the thing about people and places that win a piece of your heart; is that you never get enough of them. You always want more, even if just for a little while. On October 2018, a surprise birthday trip for our mom, we headed to the airport and straight for the Island of the Gods.
We arrived a little after noon on Malaysian Airlines, hopped on an Uber (a rather seamless experience compared to my previous arrival), and set forth to our hotel. Any guesses as to where we might have stayed?
Grandmas Hotel Legian
Of course I had to, remember the thing I said earlier about winning pieces of my heart? Grandmas Hotels in Bali really does have a little piece. This time, we decided to stay at Grandmas Hotel Legian for our first two days in Bali. A friendly and seamless check-in later, we were relaxing in our rooms and getting ready to venture out and explore the city. My sister and I already considered ourselves experts on Bali – having been there before; so walked out and began our exploring!
Shopping in Legian
From bars and restaurants to numerous retail stores selling all kinds of stuff from handicrafts to Balinese batiks, penis souvenirs, Bali souvenirs, and of course Bintang from the local 7eleven, we were shopping until our hands could no longer carry the weight from our day’s goodies. By 6, we decided it was time for dinner; since we had skipped lunch we were famished. Luckily, our hotel was within walking distance, which made the entire thing so much easier; without having to deal with the hassle of cabs!
David’s Warung – Best Warung in Legian
Having dropped off our bags back at the hotel and a quick Bintang later, we were back on the streets looking for a local warung.
What’s a warung?
Warungs are traditional and authentic Balinese restaurants; usually small restaurants by the roadside. We found one near a temple and sat ourselves down at David’s Warung. Run by an all-female crew, we ordered our meals and more Bintang and started unravelling the day’s adventures with each other. Less than 15 minutes later, our meals were set out infront of us.
The chicken was bursting with local spices and flavours, accompanied with steamed rice, a spicy AF onion/chilli sambal and some prawn crackers. The whole meal in its entirety was completely satisfying and mouth-watering. As I type this, my mouth still drools at the thought of eating that once more. David’s Warung had won a piece of my heart!
We knew we had to come back here one last time before leaving Bali.
Bellies full, we walked back to our hotel – exhausted. Thankfully the rooms at Grandmas Hotels were so comfortable, we instantly passed out!
